How to Prepare Your Trees for Hurricane Season in Southwest Florida

[TL,DR: The Atlantic hurricane season begins June 1, and waiting until a storm approaches to prepare your trees is a dangerous gamble. Proper pre-hurricane pruning reduces wind resistance and protects your property from falling branches. Identifying high-risk trees and removing compromised limbs now can save your home from severe storm damage later.]

Preparing Your Property for Florida Storms

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. That date arrives whether your landscape is ready or not. In Southwest Florida, this timeline is not abstract.

It is the start of the storm season that has given Lee County and nearby Hillsborough County major storms. Hurricane Ian left behind a massive trail of uprooted trees and crushed roofs.

Fort Myers homeowners need proper hurricane tree preparation before the first storm is named. Waiting until a hurricane watch or warning is issued means waiting in a long line.

To help protect your property, you must prepare your trees for hurricane impacts early. Make sure your trees get a professional inspection now.

Why Hurricane Season Tree Care Matters

Hurricane damage proves that strong winds find the weakest points. Trees with a heavy canopy act like sails against hurricane-force winds. A dense canopy of the tree blocks the wind and takes the full blow.

Heavy rains saturate the garden soil long before high winds arrive. This loosens the root system. When gusts exceed 100 miles per hour, that wind resistance causes massive trunks to snap or uproot.

Proper hurricane prep is basic property protection. When you prepare trees for hurricane season, you protect your roof and your family. Fallen trees cause severe storm damage every year. Hurricane damage prevention starts early.

Signs a Tree Is a Storm Risk

You can spot many tree hazards from the ground. Look for a hollow trunk or dead branches hanging in the canopy. Visible root damage around the base of the tree indicates a weak foundation.

Look closely at the soil. If the ground looks lifted, the roots are already failing. Pay attention to fungus, mushrooms growing near the trunk, or signs of a pest infestation.

These signs often indicate severe internal decay. Look closely at codominant stems, which are V-shaped branches that split from the main trunk. Deep cracks in these joints mean the weak branches will likely fail.

Which SW Florida Tree Species Are Highest Risk

Some trees handle storms worse than others. Slash pines are large with shallow roots. This makes them highly susceptible to toppling. Old laurel oaks are notorious for sudden limb failure.

Coconut palms pose a unique threat. A heavy palm frond or nut can become a dangerous projectile. These items easily become projectiles in high winds. A flying missile like a coconut can shatter a window.

Melaleuca trees are invasive and have brittle wood. If you want a wind-resistant landscape, consider planting live oaks instead. These native species are much more hurricane-resistant.

What Helps vs. What Doesn't

Properly prune your trees to help them survive. You must thin the canopy and remove dead wood. This lets strong winds flow through safely.

Preparing trees for severe weather takes time. For young trees planted recently, ensure they have adequate water and proper fertilization. You can protect small trees with burlap during extreme weather.

Do not ignore routine tree care. Avoid the “hurricane cut” on palms. Removing too many green fronds will severely weaken the palm. You should only remove dead fronds and loose palm boots.

Hatracking is not proper pruning. This illegal practice involves chopping off the top of the tree. It destroys the structure and ensures trees cannot survive hurricanes.

When to Remove vs. When to Trim

Deciding between a trim and tree removal comes down to health and location. If a tree is healthy, professional trimming is usually enough. Routine maintenance keeps strong trees safe.

If a tree has severe root rot, consider removing it. You cannot save a tree that is highly susceptible to storm damage.

A failing tree located within 15 feet of your house requires immediate removal. The risk of property damage is simply too high. A professional tree trimmer helps you make the right choice.

We do not use subcontractors. Our trained team brings $1 million in heavy equipment. We safely handle any job to protect your landscape.

We evaluate the root system, trunk health, and canopy. Then we provide a clear, honest recommendation. We focus on what your trees actually need to withstand the storm.

Our crew uses professional cranes to remove hazards without damaging your garden. We carry $2 million in liability insurance. When we finish, we clean up the site completely.

Securing Your Home Before the Storm

Storm-ready trees require proactive care. You cannot control the weather, but you can control your property. You sleep much better knowing your trees are secure.

Proper pruning reduces your risk of catastrophic property damage. A well-maintained landscape recovers much faster after a hurricane passes.

Get your trees inspected while the weather is still calm. Once a storm enters the Gulf, local tree services book up instantly. Taking action in May ensures your property is secure before hurricane season begins.

Quick Answers

How much does pre-hurricane tree trimming cost?
Costs vary based on tree size and the amount of pruning required. Our tree removal cost Fort Myers, FL guide explains pricing factors. We always provide free on-site estimates.

Can I trim my own trees before a storm?
You can trim small branches from the ground safely. You should hire a professional for large limbs or anything near power lines. DIY tree work at heights is extremely dangerous.

What is hatracking and why is it bad?
Hatracking is cutting the top off a tree. It is illegal in Florida because it destroys the tree's structure. The weak new growth easily snaps in strong winds.

When is the best time to prepare trees for hurricane season?
The best time is between January and May. You want the work completed before the season officially starts. Waiting until a storm is named is too late.

How do I care for young trees planted recently?
Young trees need adequate water and a proper layer of mulch. You might need to stake them or use burlap to protect them from high winds. Proper care helps them establish a deep root system.

Larry Hudson and his crew did an outstanding job of cutting up and removing a cottonwood that had fallen due to a recent storm. They also removed a ficus tree that had grown into our power lines. When they were done, you would not have known that the trees were ever there. They did all this quickly and left the yard immaculate. We are planning to have more work done and we will be using them again without hesitation. Thanks Larry and give your crew a big thank you from us!

These guys are truly amazing! I started on wanting to have one palm tree removed and the price they gave made me question if they would really do it that cheap. When they came to remove the tree, I requested a quote to trim some other trees. They worked with me and explained that the trees I wanted trimmed were invasive and would continue to go out of control. I got a quote and was shocked at how reasonable they were. The crew was absolutely amazing. They came in removed 3 big trees, several bushes and ground out the stumps. They cleaned up and you never knew they were there. We also discussed another tree that was very tall and just waiting for the next hurricane to fall on my home and several others. This tree was big and very tall. They again gave me a price I couldn't refuse, and they came back the following week to remove the tree. The neighbors sent me compliments on what an awesome job they did. See the pictures....you can't even tell there was a tree there. Thank you Larry. Your tree crew is absolutely amazing.
